Apparatus for applying identification and other resilient sleeves, e.g. to electric conductors, comprises a collett 15 which is reciprocable by means of a pneumatic piston and cylinder unit 17 within a tubular extension 18 of the latter and which, in its extended position, is adapted to engage the head 8 of a transfer member 7 after the latter has been inserted into the tube 18 through an aperture 29 in a stripper unit 19 screwed into the outer end of the tube 18. The transfer member 7 is drawn into the tube 18 when the collett 15 is retracted so that sleeves 13, initially collected on the member 7, are pushed by the stripper 19 along the transfer member 9 and over a conductor 12 secured in an aperture 11 in the end of the member 9. The stripper unit 19 comprises a detachable cap with radially-acting spring-loaded jaws 16 having rounded inner tips which define the central aperture 29. The collett 15 consists of a sleeve 33 which is split at its forward end and provided with a flared mouth 35 and which is held in a socket 31 screwed on to the end of piston-rod 28 by a screw 34 and a carrier 32 screwed into the socket 31. An axiallyslidable collar 38, pressed outwardly by a spring 39 surrounding the sleeve 33, engages a tapered head portion 37 of the latter to close it into engagement with the transfer member 7. Fig. 1 shows a hand-held unit with a handle 21 which incorporates a valve unit controlled by a thumb plate 22; alternatively the unit may be supported, e.g. by a hoist or mounted on a bench. When the collett 75 is in its extended position ready to pick up the transfer member 7 the collar 38 is retracted by an abutment shoulder 41 on the stripper unit 19.
