Abstract

727,942. Rivets. SWART, J. DE. April 13, 1953 [April 14, 1952], No. 10025/53. Class 89(1). [Also in Group XXII] A rivet comprises a tapered mandrel 10, Fig. 2, and a tubular split shank 12 joined to the larger end of the mandrel and forming a number of partcylindrical sections extending towards the smaller end of the mandrel and terminating in head portions 13. The mandrel is pulled by a tool 18 to set the rivet as shown in Fig. 4, and may subsequently be cut off. The rivet may be of nylon or other synthetic plastic material, or of brass or copper. The rivet may be used as an insulating grommet, in which case, an electrical conductor is moulded in along the axis of the mandrel. In a modification, the mandrel has a projecting ridge around its larger end and is severed from the shank as it is pulled to embed the ridge in the end of the shank. The tool comprises a tube 20 shaped at one end to engage the rivet head portions and containing a collet 24 attached to a rod 22 slidable against a spring 23 by squeezing together fixed and movable handles 26, 28, respectively. The serrated jaws of the collet are urged to grip the mandrel by the tapered bore of the tube.
