[Class 39(iii)] An electrode holder wherein an electrode 14 (see Fig 1) is held in a transverse guideway 13 by a plunger 11 operable in an axial plunger guide 10, is provided with separately r e n e w a b le, insulating cover members 27 extending about the ends of the guideway and detachably secured to the electrodereceiving head by means such as a clip 25. One of the cover members 27 may serve as a closure at one end of the guideway to limit the entry of the electrode. In the example shown in Fig. 1, the plunger guide 10 and crosshead 13 are enclosed by a pair of insulating fireproof members 24 held at one end by the clip 25 and at. the other by thumb levers 22 and a flame shield 26. The plunger 11 is urged into yielding contact with the electrode by a spring 16 and into non- yielding contact by a cam 20 operated by the thumb levers 22. A tubular insulating handle 32 is a push-on fit over the four external. corners of the insulating members 24, and is fitted with an orificed plug 33 to admit a cable 28. In another example, Fig. 6, the plunger 11c is operated by a screw device. Rotation of a flame shield 57 and integral collar 53, causes a threaded sleeve 50 to slide axially since it is prevented from rotating by a pin 51 engaging in a slot 52 in the plunger guide 10c and keyed to the plunger 11c. An electrode is held between a fixed jaw 71 and a pair of plunger actuated jaws 73 movable side by side over guides 70. The jaws 73 are slidably retained within the guides by laterally extending enlargements 74 at their ends. An insulating U- shaped sheath 76 and an insulating sleeve 77 are held by a retaining clip 78 and spring clip 79, which also serves to secure the cover members extending about the ends of the guideway (see Fig. 5, not shown).
