A hand tool for twisting together two ends of wire comprises a chuck member to grip the ends of the wire and means to rotate the chuck which comprise a helically-grooved member and a second member movable axially relative to the first member and having means co-operating with said groove, whereby relative axial movement in one sense causes rotation of the chuck, ratchet means being provided whereby relative axial movement in the other sense does not rotate the chuck. A shaft 10, helically grooved at 11 and carrying a chuck 31 at one end, is rotatable, and slidable to a limited extent, in a casing 13. A sleeve 12, slidable in the casing 13 over the shaft 10, carries loosely on a plug 21, an anular driving member 22 having an internal projection 23 (not shown) engaging the groove 11. The chuck comprises a sleeve 31, secured to the shaft 10, tapered, cut-away at 38, and slotted at 35, 39 to receive the wires 36, 37 to be twisted, and a member 33, formed with a blade 42, slidable in the sleeve 31 to clamp the wires thereagainst. The blade 42 is tapered longitudinally and tapered or, Fig. 6, stepped, transversely. In operation the casing 13 is first pulled by finger grips 50 towards the handle end 17 of the sleeve 12, the lower end of which abuts the top of the chuck 31, so that a flange 45 on the casing 13 engages a pin 48 on the member 33 to move it back against a spring 32 in the chuck to allow the wires to be inserted in the chuck openings. The handle 17 is then pulled out from the casing 13 so that first the blade 42 is pushed down by a flange 46 on the casing 13, into the opening 39 of the chuck to grip the wires thereagainst, and then the plug 21 lifts the driving member 22, it being locked against rotation in one direction by a spring-pressed pawl 27, to rotate the shaft 10 and thus the chuck 31 to twist the wires. The handle 17 is then released, whereupon a spring 16 moves the sleeve 12 and thus the driving member 22 back into the casing 13, the pawl 27 allowing rotation of the driving member 22 so that the shaft 11 is not rotated.
