Abstract

909,919. Unwrapping wire from terminals. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Jan. 30, 1959 [Feb. 17, 1958], No. 3369/59. Class 83 (4). A tool for removing a wrapped wire connection from a terminal comprises a shaft having at one end means for engaging the connection and a passageway for receiving the terminal, the shaft being positioned within a sleeve, a tubular handle enclosing the other end of the shaft and secured to the sleeve, a plunger slidable within the handle being attached to the said other end of the shaft, and biasing means for normally withdrawing the one end of the shaft within the sleeve. The tool includes a shaft 10 in a sleeve 12, connected thereto by a pin and slot means 14, 15, and a tubular handle 31 secured by screw-threads 33 to a threaded enlargement 18 of the sleeve 12. A sleeve 27, which may be of insulating material, surrounds the outer part of the sleeve 12 and is held to the handle 31 by a spring 26 between washers bearing on its inner flanged end and on the part 18 of the sleeve 12. In operation the tool is placed over a terminal 39 with a wrapped wire connection 42 thereon so that the terminal is received in the end of the sleeves 27, 12 and in a cavity 13 in the end of the shaft 10, and a lead-in portion 43 of the connection lodges in one of slots 28 in the end of the outer sleeve 27. The tool is then rotated so that the lead 43 bottoms in the slot 28 and is held thereby against rotation. Teeth 11 on the end of the shaft 10 engage, on continued rotation of the tool, the end of the wrapped wire 43 to loosen and unwrap it from the terminal 39 and allow it to lodge in threaded grooves 17 in the end of the sleeve 12. The wrapping may be carried and stored in the tool and ejected by depressing a plunger 35 against a spring 37 to cause the shaft 10 to slide relatively to the sleeve 12 or by rotating the tool in the opposite direction. The teeth 11 may extend in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions and the threading 17 be formed with both left and right-handed threads. U.S.A. Specification 2,804,887 is referred to.
