Abstract

876,108. Stripping cables. AMP Inc. Dec. 31, 1959 [Dec. 31, 1958 (2)], No. 44383/59. Class 36. A method of stripping the end of a sheath 8 from a conductor 15 comprises gripping the sheath so as to grip the conductor within it at a point back from the end, pushing the sheath axially back towards the gripped point to form it into a bulge 17 and cutting around the periphery of the bulge in the longitudinal direction of the conductor to sever it. The conductor may be held, either by a clamp or by hand, within a support 2 having a passageway 4 terminating in a knife edge 8 which thus surrounds the sheath. A device 10 for pushing the sheath back has a bore 16 which will receive the bared conductor but not the sheath, the latter terminating against the shoulder 18 of a recessed part of the bore. Movement of the parts 10 towards the support 2 causes the bulge 17 to form, this being severed by the knife edge 8. The method may be used for stripping the metal braid from an insulated conductor, and the cutting device may be a hard metal sleeve carried on the support and telescoping into a similar sleeve on the pushing device. Cutting may be facilitated by rotating the cutter or, where appropriate, by heating it. A plierlike tool (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown), and also a pneumatically-operated apparatus for stripping braiding (Figs. 7-10, not shown), is described.
