Abstract
641,067. Stripping cables. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and VICKERS, A. J. Sept. 22, 1948, No. 24808. [Class 36] An apparatus for removing the outer covering from an electric cable comprises a plurality of cutting blades 10, the edges 14 of which are arranged to surround the cable and which can be displaced by relative movement of the cable in one direction to permit the end of the cable to pass between the cutting edges, and which return to a cutting position when the cable is withdrawn. Four segmental knives 10 are mounted on a plate 4, each knife being held against the plate 4 with the cutting edges 14 away from the plate by a spring 11. The cable 9 is threaded through the device from the left-hand side, which tends to push the knives 10 away from the plate 4, thus increasing the diameter of the aperture formed by the edges 14 so that the cable can pass freely therethrough until the end reaches an adjustable stop 24. The other end of the cable is placed in a circumferential groove 21 in wheel 18 and is locked in position by lever 22. The handle 20 is then pulled over, causing the end of the cable to be drawn back through the stripping device. This causes the cutting edges 14 to bite into the cable cover making a circumferential cut and as the cable is further withdrawn the cover is stripped off.
