Abstract
670,829. Cable strippers. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd., and BAKER, H. A. Nov. 28, 1950 [Nov. 29, 1949], No. 30642/49. Class 36. A hand tool for making circumferential and helical cuts in the metallic sheaths of electric cables comprises a body 1 into which the cable can be passed, carrying a cutting wheel 3 mounted in a plane at right-angles to the cable axis and adjustable into a plane making an acute angle with this plane, and a cable supporting member 11, which presses the cable against the cutting-wheel 3, mounted on the body so that it is adjustable towards or away from the cutting-wheel and can be withdrawn from the position in which it is adjusted against a biasing spring 17. The wheel 3 is mounted on a threaded spindle 4 which passes through holes in bracket 2 and strip 6 which project beyond the end of tube 1, so that the spindle cannot rotate relatively to the strip 6. This strip has a arcuate slot 8 through which a pin 9 mounted on bracket 2 projects so that the strip 6 and thus the spindle 4 can be rotated through about 30 degrees. A nut 7 locks these parts in position. A bracket 10, diameterically opposite the bracket 2 carries the supporting member 11 on which are mounted four rollers 12 with their axes lying in a semi-circle. The member 11 is carried by a rod 13 secured within an externally-threaded tube 14 by means of a nut 18. The tube 14 can be rotated within a threaded hole in bracket 10, thus adjusting the position of the support 11. To insert a cable within the tool a lever 19 mounted below the nut 18 is depressed, drawing the rod 13 up against the action of spring 17. After positioning the cable end within the body 1 the lever 19 is released, causing the support 11 to engage the cable and press it against the cutter 3. The cable is rotated to make a circumferential cut in the sheath and the angle of the cutter 3 then adjusted by means of strip 6 so that further rotation of the cable causes a helical cut to be made in the sheath, extending from the circumferential cut to the cable end. A metal rod 22 having a slot 23 is then withdrawn from the body 1 to the desired position and the end of helical strip formed on the cable sheath is inserted in slot 23. The tool is then rotated to strip the severed sheath off the cable.
