Abstract
701,408. Two-part couplings. MODREY, H. J. Aug. 20, 1951, No. 19570/51. Class 38 (1) A plug, Fig. 1, comprises a flexible rubber shell 55 carrying at 58 an inner metal shell 56 connected to a conductor 57 and to the inner end of a clamping rod 59 having a clamp head 60. The rod 59 is slidable in a cup 63 which telescopes over the shell 56, and a locking slide 61 slidable on the rod 59 has a flange 66 engaged by a spring 65. The socket comprises a rubber shell 45 housing a cup 47 provided with a hole 50 and connected to a conductor 48. The size of the hole 50 corresponds with that of the clamp head 60 so that on presentation of the plug to the socket the slide 61 is retracted relatively to the head 60. When the head has passed through the hole 50 the locking slide 61 is moved into the hole by the spring 65 thereby locking the plug and socket together. On engagement of the plug in the socket the cup 63 abuts a wall 49 of the cup 47 and is telescoped further over the shell 56 ; also the forward end of the shell 55 is forced over the taper 52 of the socket shell 45 to form a seal, the shell 55 being both axially shortened and transversely expanded. To release the plug the shell 55 is gripped at its rear end and pushed towards the socket whereby the shell is further shortened and its rear end moves relatively to the cup 63. Lateral pressure is then applied so that a ridge 64 on the cup 63 is gripped by the shell 55 to hold these two parts in their relatively-displaced positions in which the head 60 extends beyond the slide 61 to permit the plug removal. In Fig. 4, the plug contact comprises a metal tube 74 secured to a rubber shell 75 at 76, and adapted to be inserted in a socket plate 71. The tube 74 has a pair of slots 81, 83 through which noses 80, 82 of a wire spring 79 respectively extend On insertion of the tube 74 into the socket hole 73 nose 80 is forced back into the tube and thereafter snaps out to lock the plug to the socket, the shell 75 being axially compressed and transversely expanded to make a seal with the socket member 70. The plug is released by pressing a button 84 to engage the nose 82 and move the spring 79 to the dotted-line position. In a further construction, Fig. 5, a rectangular section contact 94 secured at its inner end to a rubber shell 95 rotatably carries a sleeve 97 having a bayonet slot 98, a torsion spring 101 being connected between the sleeve 97 and the contact 94. The socket contact 91 carries a pin 100 which enters the slot 98 and rotates the sleeve 97 against the tension of spring 101 when the plug and socket are engaged, the pin 100 finally entering a locking groove 99, and the shell 95 being forced over a tapered part 90<SP>1</SP> of the rubber socket shell 90 to form a seal. To release the plug the shell 95 is compressed against the knurled portion of the sleeve 97 which is then manipulated by pushing on shell 95 to free the pin 100 from the groove 99, whereupon the spring 101 rotates the sleeve 97 to assist in the plug separation.
