Abstract
A solidified, non-explosive fuel comprises gel pellets containing liquid hydrocarbon such as petrol enveloped by a film of an insoluble calcium alginate. The hydrocarbon may be dispersed in an aqueous solution of algin and the product dropped through a screen into about 10 per cent. calcium chloride solution. The pellets preferably remain in the solution for about 10 minutes prior to drying. Substances acting as plasticizers such as glycerine, sorbitol, glycols, dextrines, starches or other carbohydrates may be added to the algin or a commercial refined sodium alginate containing dextrine, sucrose, and disodium phosphate may be used, preferably in admixture with unrefined sodium alginate containing 10-12 per cent. cellulosic matter. The total algin used is about 4 per cent. by weight of the hydrocarbon. Addition of a wetting agent such as soap is advantageous. In an example, the dispersion contains 42g. each of unrefined and the commercial refined sodium alginate referred to, 31, aviation gasoline and 3.41, water.
