Abstract

294,235. Henkel et Cie Ges. July 21, 1927, [Convention date]. Addition to 244,708. Starch.-The process of making dry &c. halogen-calcium starch preparations, soluble and without lumps, described in the parent Specification, and consisting in adding borax in amounts up to 2 per cent by weight of the starch used, to the preparation before or after setting has taken place, is modified by adding, in place of borax, calcium borates or boric acid compounds adapted to form in the calcium-halide starch masses, difficultly soluble calcium borates. In examples (1) Potato flour is stirred with a calcium chloride solution, and to the thickened mass is added up to 2 per cent of calcium borate. The mass is then allowed to solidify, and if subsequently mixed with cold water, forms a paste free from lumps. (2) Calcium chloride starch is made as in Example (1), but calcium hydroxide is present with the ,calcium chloride. Boric acid, up to 1.5 per cent, is added before solidification occurs, to produce calcium borate. (3) Calcium chloride starch is made as in Example (1), but up to 2 per cent of sodium meta-borate is added to the paste. The calcium borates or the additions from which they are formed may be ground with the solidified calcium halide starch.
