Abstract

Aqueous mixtures useful as hydraulic fluids comprise polyglyceryl monoacrylate and/or polyglyceryl monomethacrylate and preferably also a water miscible alcohol boiling above 100 DEG C., such as ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, or glycerol. The mixtures may also contain corrosion inhibitors such as sodium nitrite, sodium benzoate, or triethanolamine phosphate. The polyglyceryl monoacrylate or monomethacrylate may be prepared either by heating with a dilute mineral acid a polymer of an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid and 4-methylol dioxolane or a derivative thereof having one or two alkyl and/or aryl substituents in the 2-position, or alternatively the esters of 4-methylol dioxolane referred to above may be hydrolysed with mineral acid whilst in their monomeric form, and after neutralization the glyceryl acrylate or methacrylate thus produced may be polymerized whilst in solution.
