Abstract
Dry cast sheets or films of a water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol, including the products of incomplete saponification of polyvinyl esters, and polyvinyl alcohols containing acetal groups, capable of being easily stripped from the casting wheel in an undeformed or unmarred condition, are produced by incorporating into the casting solution a stripping agent of the following class: <FORM:0566144/IV/1> A water-soluble ester of a sulphonium acid salt of an aliphatic dibasic acid in which X is a bivalent radical of not more than 8 carbon atoms, Y and Z are alike or different, and are alkyl and aryl radicals of not more than 18 carbon atoms, and M is an alkali metal or ammonium radical. The sum of the carbon atoms in the radicals X, Y and Z is not less than 11 and not greater than 32. The central residue may be that of malonic, succinic, glutanic, adipic, subaric, azelaic and sebacic acids. The stripping agent may be used alone or in combination with others of the type, or with other known stripping agents, e.g. higher straight chain fatty alcohol alkali metal sulphates and alkyl naphthalene sodium sulphonates. Softening or plasticising agents may be added, e.g. glycol, hexaethylene glycol, glycerol, formamide acetamide, ethanol formamide, ethanol acetamide. Examples are given employing the di-octyl, the di-hexyl and the di-amyl ester of the sodium salt of sulphosuccinic acid, as the stripping agents.
