Abstract

Interpolymers suitable for adhesives, emulsifying-agents, dispersing-agents, fixatives for acid dyes, plastics, sizing and coating compositions, stabilizers for acid-yielding resins &c., are prepared by reacting polymethylacrylate or polymethyl methacrylate with an alcohol having a boiling-point higher than that of methyl alcohol, preferably in presence of an alkaline alcoholysis catalyst. The alcohol may be branched or straight chain aliphatic or aromatic, heterocyclic or alicyclic, saturated or unsaturated, or may contain other groups such as amino, ketone, ether, ester, &c. Polyhydric alcohols such as glycol and diethylene glycol may be used. Amino-alcohols are particularly useful. Examples are given of the preparation of interpolymers from methyl methacrylate by refluxing, in the presence of toluene or benzene and sodium methoxide with isobutyl and n-propyl alcohols, cyclohexanol, b -diethylaminoethanol, b -dimethylaminoethanol, b -dicyclohexylaminoethanol and methoxyethanol; and from methyl acrylate similarly refluxed with b -dimethylaminoethanol.
