Abstract
A pliable composition comprises an asphalt and 1 to 20 per cent by weight of an oil-soluble polymerized ester of an acrylic acid or alpha-alkyl or alpha-aryl substituted acrylic acid, the hydrocarbon radical of said ester being monovalent and containing at least 6 carbon atoms. The polymerized ester may be incorporated as such or in solution, or the unpolymerized ester added to the asphalt and then the ester polymerized, excess unpolymerized material being vacuum distilled if necessary. Specified esters are decyl acrylate, octyl acrylate and decyl methacrylate, though any of the esters of the above acrylic acids with monohydric alcohols from the group comprising aromatic, hydroaromatic and ether alcohols which have at least 6 carbon atoms such as hexyl, heptyl, octyl, nonyl, decyl, lauryl, miricyl, cetyl, octadecyl, benzyl, cyclohexyl or amylphenyl alcohols may be used. Wetting agents may also be added.
