Abstract
Acrylic polymer compositions of reduced inflammability are prepared by incorporating in the monomer or monomers from which the said acrylate polymer is derived, before or during polymerization, an acid ester of a phosphorus acid. The acrylic polymer may be derived from an acrylic acid or a -alkyl acrylic acid derivative. The phosphorus ester may be a mono- or diester of orthophosphoric acid, phosphorous acid, a monoester of hypophosphoric acid or an acid ester of pyrophosphoric acid. A free phosphorus acid and/or neutral ester thereof may also be incorporated. In comparative examples methyl methacrylate is polymerized in the presence of orthophosphoric acid, orthophosphoric acid and trichlorethyl phosphate, primary butyl phosphate, secondary lauryl phosphate and primary methyl phosphate. The products are said to have reduced water sensitivity, and to be suitable for exterior use, e.g. glazing.
