Abstract

A process for the production of thermoplastic polymers containing ester groups comprises the reaction of a copolymer of a vinyl monomer and an ester of an unsaturated acid, with an organic hydroxyl containing compound such that trans-esterification takes place. Preferably the copolymer is of an unsaturated hydrocarbon with a lower alkyl ester of acrylic, methacrylic, fumaric or maleic acid, but other vinyl monomers and esters are disclosed. The organic hydroxyl compound may be an alcohol (preferably butyl, octyl, lauryl or cetyl alcohol), a glycol (preferably polyethylene glycol), a monoether of a glycol or an halogenated alcohol.
