Abstract

Synthetic amphoteric polymers for the preparation of photographic silver halide emulsions (see Group XX) consist of a methylene chain alternate carbon atoms of which are singly or doubly substituted. One substituent of each of these alternate carbon atoms is an acidic or basic group and the second substituent, if present, is either alkyl or aryl. The polymer is necessarily insoluble in water over a range of pH values and soluble beyond both limits of the range. Preferably, the acidic groups are carboxyl and the basic groups are pyridine or diethylamine ethyl ester. In the examples vinyl pyridine is polymerized, in toluene in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, with methacrylic acid or a mixture of methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid. In a further example di-ethylamine ethylmethacrylate is polymerized in acid aqueous solution with methacrylic acid in the presence of potassium persulphate. Specifications 648,472, 694,132, 721,067, 762,019 and 807,894 are referred to.
