Abstract
The invention comprises amphoteric ion exchange resins which are polymers having units of the formula <FORM:0976566/C3/1> where A is a -P(O)(OH)2 radical or salt or monoester thereof and, optionally, units of the formula <FORM:0976566/C3/2> They are prepared by polymerizing ethylene imine -N- ethyl phosphoric acid esters of the formula <FORM:0976566/C3/3> where R is C1- 4 alkyl or a salt-forming ion in the presence of a sulphonic acid ester or dialkyl sulphate as catalyst, and when R is alkyl, saponifying or hydrolysing the product. For the copolymers, b ,b 1-(diethylene-imino) -pdiethyl benzene is added to the polymerization mixture. Solvents and emulsifiers may be present and the products may be in the form of beads.
