Abstract

706,739. Anodic oxidation of aluminium surfaces. MARTIN CO., G. L. Feb. 11, 1952, No. 3600/52. Addition to 701,390. Class 41 A hard, abrasion-resistant coating is produced on an article consisting predominantly of aluminium by anodic oxidation in an electrolyte maintained at a temperature below 40‹ F. in the presence of carbon dioxide. Coatings of 0.002 inch thickness may be produced. The electrolyte is preferably saturated with the carbon dioxide which may be introduced by bubbling from nozzles or by throwing excess of " dry ice " into the bath. The temperature should be above the freezing point of the bath; temperature of 30‹ F. is preferable. The electrolyte should be agitated and may be circulated through an external cooler. The electrolyte may contain 5-70 per cent. H 2 SO 4 with a preferable range of 5-25 per cent; oxalic or other organic acid or glycerin may be present as additions. Direct or alternating current may be employed. The coatings may be dyed or sealed as described in the parent Specification. The invention is applicable 'to coating specific alloys and specified articles as described therein.
