Abstract

Diethylaminoaceto-2-m-xylidide is manufactured by reacting a diethylaminoacetyl halide, or salt thereof, with 2-m-xylidine. The diethylaminoacetyl halide or salt thereof is advantageously used in an excess over an equimolecular proportion, the reaction being effected in the absence of a condensing agent and preferably in an inert organic diluent in which 2-m-xylidine is soluble. In an example, 2-m-xylidine is stirred with a suspension of a 50 per cent. excess of diethylaminoacetyl chloride hydrochloride in dry acetone, the solvent is then evaporated, and the residue dissolved in water, treated with caustic soda and extracted with ether. Specification 634,072 is referred to. Diethylaminoacetyl chloride hydrochloride is prepared by warming diethylaminoacetic acid hydrochloride with thionyl chloride.
