Abstract

Petroleum distillates boiling below 750 DEG F are sweetened by adding to the distillates less than 1 per cent. by volume of a catalytic material and then agitating with a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of a mild oxidizing agent. Catalytic materials used are aromatic amines, phenols, mono-, di-, or tri-alcohol amines derived from alcohols having 1-18 carbon atoms aliphatic alcohols, naphthenic acids, carboxylic acid amides and pyridine. Particular compounds mentioned are cresols, catechol, hydroquinone, pyrogallol, xylenols, petroleum phenols and napthenic acids for example those extracted from thermally cracked petroleum fractions of 400 DEG -700 DEG F boiling range, tertiary amyl phenol, phenol, beta-naphthol, p-aminophenol; ortho-, meta- and para-phenylene diamines such as N,N1-di-sec-butyl-n- -phenylenediamine, ethanolamines, propanolamines and butanolamines; methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, iso-propyl, butyl, amyl and octyl alcohols; and formamide, acetamide, propionamide, n-butyramide, isovaleramide, benzamide, N-butylbenzamide, N-isopropylbenzamide, N-ethylbenzamide and N-methylbenzamide. Oxidizing agents specified are oxygen air peroxides and permanganates, for example hydrogen peroxide. The alkali metal hydroxide may be sodium, potassium or lithium hydroxides. The petroleum distillate may be pretreated by treating with dilute alkali metal hydroxide solution or by blowing with air to remove hydrogen sulphide.
