Abstract
An anion-exchange material is produced by reacting epichlorhydrin with a tertiary amine, such as pyridine or its methyl or ethyl derivatives, and insolubilising the product by heating it alone or with a phenol and an aldehyde or with a phenol-aldehyde intermediate condensation product. The heating is carried out at 130 DEG C. or higher temperatures. When prepared for use or regenerated with alkali metal carbonates the product removes from solution anions of mineral and strong organic acids. After treatment with caustic alkali, the material absorbs dissolved silica, CO2, or other weak acids. In examples: (1) the product obtained by reacting epichlorhydrin with pyridine containing methyl and ethyl pyridines is heated at 150 DEG C. whilst covered with tetralin; (2) an epichlorhydrin-pyridine reaction product is mixed with a phenol-aldehyde condensate and the mixture heated to 190 DEG C. The product in each case is granulated and treated with sodium carbonate or hydroxide. Specified also are tertiary amines: triethylamine, dimethylaniline, and quinoline; phenols: hydroquinone, catechol, resorcinol and pyrogallol. The products may be used in the process of Specification 655,555.
