Abstract

Phenols and aromatic amines are stabilized and/or decolorised by contact with a basic aqueous solution containing dithionite ions. Specified compounds are:- b -naphthol, 1phenanthrol, resorcinol, pyrogallol, phenol, o-, m- and p-cresols, the xylenols, o-ethylphenol, p-octylphenol, 2:4:6 - tritert-butylphenol, durenol, 2-methyl-6-isopropylphenol, 2-ethyl-6-tert-butylphenol, 2-hexyl-6-tert-octylphenol, 2-propyl-6-cyclohexylphenol and 2:6di-isopropyl, -sec-butyl, -sec-amyl, -sec-octyl, -tert-butyl, -tert-amyl, -tert-heptyl and -tertoctylphenols; biphenols such as 3,31,5,51-tetratert-butyl biphenol and bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4hydroxyl)methane; b -naphthylamine, phenylenediamine, durenediamine, aniline, methyl and dimethyl anilines, 2:6 - diethylaniline, o - tert - butylaniline, 2:4 - ditert-butylaniline, monoaminodurine and p-octylaniline. Zn, Ca, Na and K dithionites are mentioned; basic compounds which may be used include NaOH, KOH, Ca(OH)2, K2CO3 and NaHCO3. The treatment may be combined with an alkylation process in which a phenol or aromatic amine is alkylated, preferably with an olefine containing 2-8 carbon atoms, in the presence of an acidic alkylation catalyst and the product is treated with a solution containing dithionate ions before it is isolated.
