Abstract

Phenols are alkylated with alcohols or olefins in presence of a solution or water and/or carboxylic acids of a Group IIa, IIb or III metal halide, the solution being used only in an amount sufficient for it to dissolve homogenously in the reaction mixture. It is stated that the process may be controlled to give predominantly either ortho or para substitution and alternatively it may be used to convert ortho to para products. It is preferred to use as activators halogen hydracids or carboxylic acids. Examples describe the production of o- and p-t-butyl and di-t-butylphenols from phenol and isobutylene, isobutyl alcohol, triisobutylene or diisobutylene (in the latter case p-octylphenol may be the main product, depending on reaction conditions). Phenols which may be alkylated include o-cresol, thymol, t-butylphenols, halogen phenols, naphthols, halogen naphthols, o- and p-arylphenols, resorcinol and pyrogallol.
