Abstract

A dimethylacylamide of formula RCON(CH3)2 in which R is an alkyl radical having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, is prepared by a method comprising adding dimethylamine and an acyl compound selected from acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid and the corresponding anhydrides to a mixture comprising the desired dimethylacyl amide and the corresponding acid, the proportion of acid being less than that corresponding to the azeotrope thereof with dimethylacylamide. In the examples: (a) a mixture of 88 per cent by weight of dimethyl acetamide and 12 per cent of acetic acid is heated to boiling-point and acetic acid and dimethylamine are passed in to form dimethyl acetamide; (b) propionic acid and dimethylamine are passed into a mixture of dimethyl propionamide and propionic acid to give dimethyl propionamide; and (c) butyric acid and dimethylamine are passed into a mixture of dimethylbutyramide and butyric acid to give dimethyl butyramide.
