Abstract
Impact-resistant polystyrene having improved surface properties is made by first polymerizing styrene in which is dissolved a substantially uncrosslinked rubber, and then mechanically mixing the product with a crosslinked or crosslinkable rubber. Up to 35% of the styrene in the first stage of the process may be replaced by a comonomer, e.g. acrylonitrile, alkylstyrenes and halostyrenes. The examples describe polymerizing styrene with: (1) a butadiene-styrene copolymer, and mixing the product with a butadiene-styrene copolymer, (2) a butadiene-styrene copolymer, and mixing the product with a butadiene-butyl fumarate copolymer, (3) cis-1,4-polybutadiene, and mixing the product with a butadiene-butyl fumarate copolymer, (4-5) acrylonitrile, a butylacrylate-acrylonitrile copolymer and cis-1,4-polybutadiene, and mixing the product with a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer.
