Abstract

Oxymethylene polymers are made by contacting monomeric formaldehyde with an aliphatic lithium compound in solution. The lithium compound is preferably one having up to 15 carbon atoms, such compounds as n-butyl lithium, vinyl lithium, 3-propyl-butyl lithium, cyclohexyl propyl lithium, and chlorobutyl lithium occurring in a list. Solvents specified are aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. The usual chain transfer agents may be present as may also the usual endcapping agents, e.g. etherifying, isocyanating, thiocyanating and esterifying compounds.
