Abstract
A steel backing strip for making bearing liners (see Group XXII) is coated with a layer of composite metallic material such as copper-lead by spreading loose or pre-alloyed or mixed copper-lead powder having a composition 70 per cent. copper, 30 per cent. lead on to the steel backing to form a layer of approximately 0.110 inch in thickness, said backing having previously been prepared as by copper plating, and then lightly sintering the copper-lead at a temperature of about 890 DEG C. for about 15 minutes to knit the particles together and bond the copper-lead structure to the backing. A copper-lead having a composition 60 per cent. copper and 40 per cent. lead may be used and sintered at 850 DEG C.
