Abstract

A lining comprising a metallic mixture of silver with lead, or copper with lead, with or without other constituents, is applied to parts, other than the bore, of a bush or liner, in two stages, by first spraying a porous interlayer and then spraying a denser outer layer, the backing, interlayer and outerlayer being bonded by sintering. The flanges of a bush may first be shot-blasted to roughen their surface and degreased in trichlorethylene vapour. A porous layer of the metallic mixture is then sprayed on, using a lower air pressure than normal and sintered in a reducing atmosphere, e.g., cracked ammonia. A further layer of the same material but of greater thickness and density is then sprayed on and sintered in a similar manner. For instance, a layer of lead-bronze of composition 70 per cent Cu, 29 per cent Pb, 1 per cent Sn may be heat treated at 800-850 DEG C for 1 hour. In a modification, both layers are sprayed on before the heat treatment. The bush is then heat treated at a lower-than-sintering temperature in a reducing atmosphere for a period sufficient to ensure that the air in the pores is completely displaced by the reducing gas, and then the temperature. A lead bronze lining of 75 per cent Cu, 20 per cent Pb and 5 per cent Sn may be produced either (a) by spraying a mixture of the three metal powders in the desired proportions (b) by spraying a single powder in which every particle has the desired composition (c) by spraying a mixture of equal parts of 70 per cent Cu, 30 per cent Pb powder and 80 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Sn, 10 per cent Pb powder.
