Abstract

704,671. Making shock absorber casings. ARMSTRONG'S PATENTS CO., Ltd., and SMITH, R. Jan. 21, 1952 [Oct. 21, 1950], No. 25690/50. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4) Welding.-In a method of making telescopic shock absorber casings an end plate 12, Fig. 2, is attached to a reduced section end 11 b of a casing 11 by electric resistance welding. The plate 12 has an integral frusto-conical portion 12a which fits within the reduced end of the casing. On application of welding current and axial pressure the end 11e, Fig. 3, of the casing is bent further inwards so that its initially external surface engages the lower face of the plate 12. A chamfer 11c on the casing localises the heat generated during welding. A ring 13 or both (not shown) may be simultaneously welded to the upper face of the plate 12.
