Abstract

704,445. Change-speed gear. FALK CORPORATION. June 9, 1952, No. 14474/52. Class 80 (2) Variable ratio speed reducing gearing comprises a driven shaft 15, Fig. 1, carrying a gear 26 meshing a gear 27 on a shaft 28, a second shaft 34, Fig. 2, parallel to the shaft 28, being drivingly connected thereto by interchangeable pick-off gears 32, 33. As shown, the shaft 34 is driven from a shaft 16 through a reduction train 47, 48 housed in a detachable cartridge 41; this cartridge can be replaced by alternative cartridges containing gear trains giving two or three stages of speed reduction, Figs. 9a, 9b (not shown). The gearing is contained in a rectangular casing 10, provided with mounting pads 14 by which it can be secured to a wall. floor, ceiling &c, with the driven shaft 15 horizontal or vertical, as required, the cssing acting as a reservoir for oil o; to prevent the oil leaking out past the shaft 15 when the gearing is in the Fig. 1 position with this shaft projecting downwardly, the casing is provided with an inwardly projecting tubular flange 23, the upper edge of which is above the oil level. The cartridge 41 has a circular mounting flange 44, Fig. 11, with respect to which the shaft 16 is eccentric, so that by rotation of the cartridge through 180 degrees when the gearbox is inverted from the Fig. 1 to' the Fig. 11 position, the shaft 16 is kept above the level of the oil, loss of which is thus prevented. When it is required that the driven shaft should, be horizontal, the cartridge 41 can be rotated either clockwise or anti-clockwise through 90 degrees, from the Fig. 11 position' shown, for the same purpose, such rotation necessitating changing the gear 48 for one of a smaller diameter for anti-clockwise rotation, and for one of a larger diameter for clockwise rotation. The gears 26 and 32, 33 are reached through readily detachable parts 19, 35 respectively.
