Abstract

411,325. Lubricating variable-speed gearing. REO MOTOR CAR CO., 1331, South Washington Avenue, Lansing, Michigan, U.S.A. Aug. 18, 1933, No. 23113. Convention date, Oct. 17, 1932. [Classes 12 (ii) and 12 (iii).] A transmission gear casing C is divided into two parts by a partition K. One part houses normally stationary parts, such as gears H, H<1>, H<2>, on a countershaft F, and the other part houses constantly rotating parts such as a drum J enclosing centrifugally controlled planetary gears acting as an automatic gearshifting mechanism. A small aperture N connects the two parts of the housing C and a rib L<1> is formed on the upper wall M. When the transmission gear is idle the lubricant levels on both sides of the partition K are the same. When the gears are rotated the drum J throws lubricant against the rib L<1>, which directs it into the housing part containing the countershaft F. The level of lubricant in the housing part containing the constantly rotating parts is thus kept low so that little churning-up of the oil occurs. A part of the lubricant thrown by the drum J falls into a channel O and is led to lubricate the parts within the drum J.
