Abstract

704,097. Impregnated fibre-board. AKTIEBOLAGET STATENS SKOGSINDUSTRIER. July 11, 1951 [July 14, 1950], No. 16400/51. Class 96 Cardboard, wallboard, or chipboard &c. is impregnated, during manufacture, e.g. with tall oil modified with maleic acid anhydride and esterified with glycerol, glycol. sorbitol, or pentaerythritol or with linseed oil, or phenol-, urea- or melamine-formaldehyde resin etherified with alcohol, the impregnant being applied to the side of the material turned towards the polished plate of a hot press, the other surface of the material contacting a wire-mesh to allow water, displaced by the impregnant, to escape. The impregnant may thus penetrate part-way, or entirely through the board. The impregnant may be mixed with a drying, or a semi-drying oil, and a siccative, e.g. manganese or iron naphthenate, linoleate, or rosinate which accelerate the hardening and give. characteristic colouring. The impregnant may be applied as an aqueous emulsion using ammonium compounds as emulsifying agents but the emulsifying agent, or at all events the part of the board contacting the press-plate should be acidic to avoid sticking. The board may be hot-pressed at 15 to 50 kg/sq. cm. at 130 to 220‹C. and hardened in air at 150 to 200‹C. Insecticides or fungicides, e.g. tetra- or pentachlorphenol or chloronaphthalene may be incorporated.
