Abstract
465,268. Roof shingles. TENNANT, W. J. (Bakelite Building Products Co., Inc.) Oct. 4, 1935, No. 27491. [Class 87 (i)] Shingles formed by coating an asphalted fibrous base 10 on one or both faces with hydraulic cement 12 and grit as described in Specification 423,694, are provided with a film of water repellant material before the cement has set, and curing is completed by stacking the shingles so that there is substantially no free circulation of air over the cement. The water-repelling film prevents bonding of the shingles and may also be applied to the uncemented faces. Suitable water repellents are synthetic resins, asphalt, wax, and oils such as linseed or tung oil. Alternatively, the water repellent may be incorporated, for example, from 1 to 10 per cent, in the cement mix. The shingles may be stacked with like or unlike faces in contact, or separating sheets 14, Fig. 14, of waxed or oiled paper or cloth may be employed; the sheets become wrinkled by absorption of moisture and produce a simulation of wood grain on the cement faces. Figs. 10 and 12 show methods of stacking shingles in which the asphalted base 10 is only partly coated with cement, and Fig. 18 shows stacked corrugated shingles.
