Class 20(iv) [Also in Group XIII] Floors or walls are covered with a smooth, resilient sound-insulating surface layer by applying to the floor &c. a suspension of fibres in water containing in dispersed form a substantial proportion of bitumen, then felting the fibres into a compact, continuous layer and finally heattreating.the layer in situ. Before laying the material, the surface may be given a coating of an adhesive, preferably one having a bituminous or rubber latex base. The composition 1 is prepared by making a porridge-like mass of water and vegetable fibres and adding aqueous bitumen emulsion, with colouring matter if desired. It is spread over the base surface 2 which has been coated with adhesive 3, and consolidated by a roller device shown in Fig. 3, the device also serving to pick up water expressed from the layer by means of an endless band 6 of absorbent material which absorbs the water from the surface and then passes over a suction chamber 7 into which the water is drawn by the vacuum produced by a fan 9. A heated metal roller or heated metal platen is then drawn over the surface to evaporate the remaining moisture and to cause the bitumen, which represents about 35 per cent of the final coating, to melt or soften to bind the fibres together and give a flat, smooth surface.
