Abstract

A sheet or strip material suitable for use as an underlayer in roofing, comprises a sheet or strip of thick paper-like flexible absorbent fibre felt formed mainly of animal and/or vegetable fibres or thick paper-like flexible absorbent asbestos fibre felt formed mainly of asbestos fibres impregnated with bituminous material e.g. coaltar or asphalt, the impregnated sheet being provided with a plurality of separated and distributed apertures and having distributed granular material adhering to one face thereof. The impregnated apertured sheet or strip may be coated on one or both faces with a layer of bituminous material and the distributed granular material is in adhering engagement with the coating on the or one of the surfaces with granules projecting from the surface of the coating. The material may be produced by impregnating the sheet or strip with bituminous material, cooling, forming a plurality of separated and distributed apertures through the sheet or strip and applying distributed granular material on one face of the impregnated, apertured sheet or strip. One or both faces may be coated with further bituminous material prior to the application of the granular material.
