[Also in Group VIII] Wood is impregnated with an impregnant, which may be a thermoplastic resin, e.g. polystyrene, or a thermosetting resin, e.g. a formaldehyde-melamine resin, by totally saturating the wood with a solvent therefor, and then, without removing the solvent contained in the wood, placing the latter in contact with the impregnant in a highly concentrated form, i.e. mixed with a quantity of solvent less in weight than the impregnant, or in a substantially solid powdered form. Thin sheets of wood, after soaking, may be sprinkled with the dry impregnant or painted with a viscous mixture thereof with a solvent, stacked, and, after standing for sufficient time to allow penetration of the impregnant, united by heat and pressure.
