Abstract

703,547. Ships' steering gear. DONKIN & CO., Ltd., PAULIN, W. S., and STOREY, E. July 30, 1951 [Aug. 10, 1950], No. 19878/50. Class 114 A hydraulic steering system which may be operated by power or hand has a single variablestroke pump 30 driven by the bridge hand-wheel 33 and a change-over cock for selecting the type of operation, whereby during power steering the pump stroke is fixed and it is connected through pipes 28, 29 with ram cylinders 26, 27 controlling the operation of a power driven pump 21 supplying the power cylinders 15, 16 of a ram 13 connected to the rudder 10, and during hand steering the pump 30 is connected directly, through pipes 17, 18, with the power cylinders and the latter are connected with the stroke varying mechanism so that the pump stroke is reduced as the torque required to turn the rudder increases. The operation of the change-over cock from hand to power and the fixing of the stroke may be effected by a common lever or alternatively separate levers such as 45 may be used.
