Abstract

[Class 102 (i)] [Also in Groups XXXIII and XXIX] In hydraulic apparatus in which a pair of rams or equivalent are in operative connection with an element to be displaced and which are adapted to be hydraulically operated by a power-driven variable stroke pump, the stroke varying mechanism of which is actuated by excess pressure in the system to vary the stroke according to the load, the motor driving the pump is a reversible one and the pump always has some stroke from a maximum to a minimum. Rams 2, 3 connected to a rudder tiller 6 are movable in cylinders 4, 5, which are connected by pipes 7, 8 with a variable stroke pump 9 driven by a reversible motor 10. When the motor is a steam engine, it is controlled by a valve 11 from a hand wheel 12 through a floating hunting lever 13. The stroke varying gear includes a differential ram 15, 16, open to pipes 7a, 8a, which branch from the main pipes 7, 8, and these rams act against a spring 14, the compression of which is adjustable by the end plate 19. When an electric motor is used, the valve 11 is replaced by a corresponding switch gear.
