Abstract

527,013. Fluid-pressure servomotors. JOHNSON, M. E., and BARKER, S. Jan. 31, 1939, No. 3253. [Classes 69 (ii) and 135] Steering-gear for power boats, but also applicable to road vehicles and aircraft, comprises a servomotor f connected to the rudders &c. a and controlled by a valve or equivalent device h which is operated by a hydraulic telemotor system comprising a pair of plungers actuated by an eccentric on the shaft of the steering-wheel s or tiller,' so as to force liquid through one or other of pipes p<SP>1</SP>, q<SP>1</SP> leading to opposite sides of a fixed piston v, Fig. 4, in a movable casing o connected at n to a lever m, the servomotor f being operated by vacuum or by fluid pressure separate from that used in the telemotor system and supplied from a tank j. The control valve h comprises. a casing connected by a rod g<SP>1</SP> to the lever m, and having another rod g connecting the rudders &c. to a single piston valve sliding within the casing as described in Specification 510,790. The lever m may constitute the drop-arm of a manual steering-gear such as is described in Specification 510,790, the lever being mounted freely on the worm-wheel shaft or the like, but being adapted for connection thereto by a clutch device which is disconnected so long as steering is to be effected through the wheel s and the telemotor system, but locks the lever to its shaft when the manual steering-gear is to be operated, the link n being disconnected from the lever.
