Abstract

815,080. Vehicle power steering. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 12, 1957 [April 13, 1956], No. 8088/57. Addition to 814,496. Class 79(5) In a motor vehicle with servo-assisted power steering having the action of a control valve 80, Fig. la modulated by a motion-senser such as an accelermeter 100, Fig. lb according to the parent Specification the control valve 80 is subjected to fluid pressure from a manual control valve 26, Fig. 1, and from valves 122, 122<SP>1</SP> controlled by the accelerometer. The valve 80 is supplied with pressure fluid through a central inlet pipe 82 and controls the fluid pressure in pipes 74, 78 leading to opposite ends of the servo-motor cylinder 72 of the steering mechanism 60. Initial movement of the valve spool 86 is caused by manual movement of the steering column 12 which applies torque to the steering mechanism 60 and moves a spool 24 in a steering control valve 26 which supplies pressure fluid through pipes 88, 90 to pistons 92, 94 engaging opposite ends of the spool 86. Feedback pressure providing steering fuel is obtained in the valve 26 through channels 29, 31 leading to opposed ends of the spool 24 and a similar resistance to displacement of the spool 86 is provided by a second pair of opposed pistons 96, 96<SP>1</SP> connected to the pipes 74, 78. Movement of the spool 86 is further modified by a third p a i r of opposed pistons 98, 98<SP>1</SP> connected through pipes 99, 99<SP>1</SP> to valves 122, 122<SP>1</SP> in the body of the accelerometer 100 and actuated by movements of the pendulum 102 mounted within the body. The pendulum 102 is damped by fluid in a chamber 103 and has rounded cam faces 108 engaging a pair of opposed plungers 110, 112 slidable in ported casings against the action of return springs 110, 112 and connecting the outlet pipes 99, 99<SP>1</SP> to the pressure inlet line 82 or to exhaust. Reduced diameter extensions 120, 120<SP>1</SP> on the plungers 110, 112 influenced by pressures in the supply lines 99, 99<SP>1</SP> tend to re-centre the pendulum 102. In operation, when the vehicle is steered at low speed there is maximum servoassistance but movement of the spool 86 is resisted during fast turns. During skidding the action of the accelerometer tends to right the vehicle automatically.
