816,946. Vehicle power steering. ETABLISSEMENTS P. JACOTTET. Sept. 27, 1956 [Oct. 5, 1955], No. 29513/56. Class 79(5) In a motor vehicle servo-assisted steering system comprising a thrust amplifier Fig. 1 operated from the steering gear 8 through a control rod 10, means such as springs 15 or hydraulically loaded piston are provided to urge the control rod into the neutral position for steering straight ahead and enables the driver to sense the degree of lock. In one example in which the rod 10 operates ball valves 5, 6 controlling the movement of a piston 11, a disc 12 integral with the rod 10 is urged to a neutral central position by spings 14, 15 in a fixed cylinder 16. In a modification the rod has two integral discs 40, 41, Fig. IV, and is centred by opposed annular pistons 42, 43 in a hydraulic cylinder 40a. The pistons are loaded by a spring 44 supplemented by hydraulic pressure which is adjustable from a reduction valve 46a operated by the driver to vary the torque applied at the steering wheel according to requirement. In an application in which the rod 10 is actuated by a rack and pinion 9a, 56, Fig. V, the rack 9a is urged to a straight-ahead steering position through a gear sector 50 which is coupled through links 51, 52 to a centralizing hydraulic cylinder 53 movable over a fixed piston 54.
