Abstract

745,519. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems; valves. MULTI-STEERING CO., Ltd., [formerly PERFECT STEERING CO., Ltd.], and FOSTER, W. G. July 17, 1953 [July 17, 1952], No. 18142/52. Class 135. A steering gear for a vehicle comprises two servomotors arranged respectively to operate the steering mechanisms for the front and rear wheels of the vehicle, two valves controlling said servomotors and themselves controlled respectively by rotatable movement and bodily swing- ing movement of a steering shaft and also by follow-up mechanism associated with the road wheels. When the steering column 10 is swung from side to side, it rotates a tubular casing 23 and, through worm gearing 26 and a crank 28, moves a rod 29 longitudinally to actuate a valve 55. This valve controls a servomotor 40 actuating one set of steerable wheels &c. 30 and the movement produced in the wheels is fed back to move the casing of valve 55 to recentre the valve. The feed-back link comprises a cylinder 32 integral with the casing of valve 55, the cylinder enclosing a piston 34 carried by rod 29 and being centred by springs 35. The pressure-fluid supply of the servomotor is obtained from one or more pumps 60, 61 which are fed from a tank 64 and are driven from the engine and the cardan shaft &c., and the supply passes through non-return valves 67 to an accumulator, the pressure being maintained by a relief valve 65. Should the pressure-fluid supply fail, a small amount of lost-motion permitted by the coils of springs 35 between rod 29 and cylinder 32 will be taken up and the wheels 30 will be actuated directly from the steering column. Springs 35 may be replaced by a compressible rubber pad or a pneumatic piston-and-cylinder mechanism. When the steering-wheel 11 is rotated it acts on another set of steerable wheels 21 through worm gearing 13, bell-cranks 14, 19, and a servomotor system 22 similar to that described above. Specification 580,422, [Group XXXI], is referred to.
