Abstract
302,431. Vickers, Ltd., Variable Speed Gear, Ltd., and Ingoldby, M. K. Oct. 5, 1927. Cam-actuated pumps; stroke, varying. -In a variable-delivery pump of the kind comprising one or more pistons operated by an adjustable member such as a tilting box B, which is under the dual control of a hand-operated device and an automatic device responsive to variations of pressure in the liquid delivered by the pump, an independent adjustable stop or stops E, E are provided for limiting the movements of the tilting-box on one or both sides of its neutral position, the position to which the stop is adjusted determining the stroke of the pistons, while the adjustment of the hand-operated device determines the direction of movement of the tilting-box and the maximum stroke to be given to the piston. The automatic control may comprise a double-acting ram D exposed on opposite sides to the suction and delivery pressures of the pump through pipes D<2>, D3 and connected to a shaft C provided with a screw-thread engaging a nut B<3> on an arm B<2> connected to the trunnions of the tilting-box B. The action of the ram is opposed by a spring C<4>. The hand control may be effected by a servomotor C<2> rotating the shaft C through worm and bevel gearing and a shaft C<x>. The motor C<2> is started by a hand lever C<3> connected to the motor switch C<6> by linkwork and a floating lever C<5> pivoted to a nut C<7> on a threaded portion of the shaft C<x> to form a hunting-gear. Or the shaft 0 may be rotated by a hand-wheel C' on the shaft C<x> or by a crank C<1x> on the shaft of the motor C<2>. The cam stops E, E may be rotated by a motor E<4> through worm gearing. A cam F on the shaft of one of the stops may move a by-pass valve F<1> to shortcircuit the suction and pressure sides D', D' of the pump and when the stops E are arranged to hold the tilting-box in no-stroke position.
