Abstract

Steering-gear. - Relates to ships' Steering-gear worked by fluid pressure derived from a pump which is irreversible and provided with means for varying the delivery. The tiller arm is operated by two opposed rams to which pressure fluid is supplied by pipes 5, 6. A variable-stroke pump 9 is driven by an electric motor and delivers fluid through pipe 17 to spaces 19, 19<a>. The controlling-valve 10 is operated by a rod 24 through a lever 23 pivoted to the rams, so that pressure fluid may be supplied by either of the passages 21 to the pipes 5 or 6. The corresponding movement of the rams brings the valve 10 back to its neutral position. Spring-controlled safety-valves 22 are provided so that the fluid is by-passed in either direction if the pressure becomes too high. When the valve 10 is in neutral petition, the pressure produced in the space 19 forces the piston 12<a> to move back, thus varying the pump delivery. A hand-operated by-pass valve 7 may be provided which, when open, permits the rudder to be operated by hand
