To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CECIL E. PAINE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Bath, Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ships. Steering-Gears, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in ships steering gear of the type in which fluid pressure is used to effect the movements of the rudder, which pressure is;
secured through a pump driven by a motor Valves 22 are provided, controlling passages running constantly in one direction, such for example'as an electric motor.
' The object of the invention ,is to de vise a simple,- economical, durable and efficient form of apparatus and particularly to provide a system by which the proper movements may be imparted to the rudder without the use of a reversible pump for securing; the proper flow of pressure fluid to operate the steering ram in both direc tions. 7
With these and other objects .in view the invention includes the novel features of construction and arrangement of parts here'- inafter described and particularly defined by the appended claims.
An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view but with parts shown in section, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectionalview of the valve and associated parts shown partly in plan. Referring by reference characters to this drawing'the numeral 1 designates the rudder post or head carrying the tiller arm-2, which is connected by a slot and pivoted block arrangement with a member-3, which forms continuations of or connects a pair of rams or pistons working respectively in the opposed cylinders 4 and 4, which. parts may be of the'ordinary or any desired construction. The motive fluid is supplied to 5 and 6,-which are connected by a by-pass controlled by a valve 7 so as to allow the fluid to pass readily from one pipeto the other, when hand steering is desired as more specifically referred to hereinafter.

Oppositely acting spring pressed safety 22 directly connecting the chambers 21, so that if pressure on either side runs too high-direct communication between the ram cylinders is aflorded.
The pump is adapted to be automatically adjusted to force fluid through the discharge pipe by a spring 14 acting on rod 13, which in turn rocks gear segment 15, which latter operates the gear 16 on the trunnion arm'of the pump.
When the valve is in neutral position pressure is held or'built up in chamber 19 and branch 19, which latter communicates with a cylinder 12 containing a piston 12f fast on or connected'with rod 13. The pressure of fluid against piston 12 moves rod 13 to set and hold thepurnp at zero, as long as thereversing valve is in neutral position.
The shifting of the valve in either direction places valve chamber 19 in communication with one or the other .of chambers'21 and connected pipe 5 or 6 with the corre- .Which thereafter continues to force fluid into the passage 21 just opened.
24 designates a controlling elementwhich is to be operated by any, suitable means, such as the ordinary telemotorapparatus, and which is connected to a lever. 23, pivotally connected at 23 to the stem 11 of the reversing valve, the other end of the lever being connected to the rain member 1. This lever 23 is therefore a floating levefandas' soon' as motion of rod 24 is stopped'the on as the reversing valve has thus,

Any suitable means may be provided for hand steering when valve 7 has been operated to place both passages 21 in communication.
What I claim is:
1. In a steering gear, a steering motor, a continuously operable variable stroke irreversible pump for supplying motive fluid to actuate said motor, a reversing valve for reversing the flow of fluid between the pump and motor adapted in one position to cut ofl said flow, and means whereby the building up of said flow varies the stroke of the P P- 2.
