Abstract

703,212. Direct connections between conductors. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Jan. 9, 1953 [Jan. 23, 1952], No. 1914/52. Class 38 (1) A method of making a joint between two cables each having a pair of conductors insulated by a single strip of insulating material rolled in an S-formation as in Specification 679,934, comprises the steps of bringing the cables into overlapping relationship, providing tight sleeves 4, 5, e.g. of textile material, a short distance from the end of each cable to anchor the insulation, withdrawing the end part of one conductor from the insulation of each cable (1a, 2b), and binding the withdrawn parts round the still-insulated conductors 2a, 1b respectively, stripping the insulation off the latter up to the binding turns, and then twisting the corresponding conductors together. The twisted parts may be soldered, and are bent back to lie along the sleeves 4, 5, a larger sleeve 3 being then slipped over the joint. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), each cable is twisted to anchor the insulation instead of using sleeves, while in yet another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), each exposed conductor portion is first wound round the unexposed conductor of its own pair to anchor the insulation.
