702,814. Confining dust on generation. OFTEDAL, L. March 14, 1952 [March 20, 1951], No. 6701/52. Class 8 (2). In a suction hood having a bottom exhaust duct 6 and comprising halves 4, 5, Fig. 2, connected together e.g., by hinges 9, Fig. 1, and a bolt 10 so as to enclose about three quarters the circumferential surface of a grinding wheel 1 leaving narrow clearances 7 between the wheel sides and the inner walls of the casing halves except for cup-like projections 4", 5" at the centre, the upper front edge of the inner wall of each half has a substantially vertical radial channel or groove 11 open at the top to atmosphere and at the bottom to the corresponding space formed by the cup-like projection. Each groove 11 diverges towards the wheel centre and forms a guide for a vertically adjustable gate 12 which almost blocks the upper end of the hood and deflects air induced upwardly by the rotating wheel down a duct 14 formed by partitions 4", 5" to the exhaust duct 6. The resulting partial suction in the grooves 11 picks up particles leaving the top of the wheel, and said suction is equalised in the grooves 11 by 'a port 13 in the gate 12. In a modification the gate is of such width as to extend to the base of each groove and has a valve controlled aperture connecting the port 13 to atmosphere.
