Abstract
702,227. Dry shavers. SUNBEAM CORPORATION. May 9, 1951, No. 10938/51. Class 131 [Also in Group XXXV] An electric dry shaver comprises a casing having a pair of rectangular, cupshaped, complementary portions, spaced apart a distance less than the smaller dimension of the portions, at least one cutting head extending entirely along the longest edge of the casing which contains a relatively flat rotary motor, the axis of rotation of the motor extending in the direction of the minimum dimension of the casing and at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the cutter, and a lever arrangement mounted in the casing to drivingly interconnect the motor and the cutter. As shown, the casing 11 comprises complementary, moulded plastic portions 11a, 11b secured together by fastening screws 17 and is provided with two cutting heads each having a stationary cutting plate 12 and a movable, spring-urged, cutter 13 reciprocated by a driving lever 10 from a rotary impulse motor 14. A rotating crank shaft 35, parallel to and offset from a line joining the mid-points of the casing portions 11a, 11b has an elliptical end 35a for controlling the contacts of the impulse motor and' at the other end terminates in an eccentric pin 39 engaged in an elongated opening 43 in the driving lever 40 which is pivoted at 41, an arm 40a of the lever 40 extending into a recess 46 at one end of each movable cutter 13. A manually actuable starting means is provided which comprises a lever 69, pivotally mounted at 70 on bearing plates 29, 30, and having a portion 69a manually engageable through an aperture 68 in the casing 11. A projection 69b stresses a torsion spring wrapped round the pivot 70 and having one end 71a anchored to a pin 72 projecting from the bearing plate 29. A lateral projection 71c of the spring engages a ratchet wheel 76 secured to the crank shaft 35 and release of the starting lever provides an initial rotation of the motor. In a modification the driving levers engage recesses at the centres of the cutters and a starting wheel is secured to an extension of the crank shaft 35. In a further modification a double field winding structure has windings disposed at the bight portions of the field structure and the armature is arranged at the adjacent ends of the field structure remote from the windings to distribute the heat produced and simplify cooling of the motor. Specification 663,292 is referred to.
